Personal trainer: Kunal Jhaveri, a strength & conditioning coach and trainer for 9 years, with a Degree in Kinesiology/ Exercise Science. CEO and owner of Bear Grips. Should you mix strength with cardio every day? If you are looking for a complete workout, having exercises for both strength and cardio is the most efficient. However, if you are looking to accomplish something specific (build muscle, lose weight, etc.) it would be much more efficient to focus on that particular area. Should you do cardio one day followed by strength the next? When working out for strength, it is ideal to put some amount of cardio in your workout. For example, you can use cardio only as a warm up and/or cooldown with a quick run. But yes, switching the focus of your workouts each day can help you workout your entire body by the end of the week with more focused (and therefore more efficient) workouts. Should you focus more on cardio or more on strength? It depends on what you want to achieve. If you want to gain more resistance or to gain speed it would be better to focus on cardio. If you want to strengthen your grip or build muscle it would be better to focus on strength. If you’re not sure what you want to accomplish it would be better to have complete workouts that include both strength and cardio. What are the best mixes for various results (weight loss/toning/building muscle)? If you want to lose weight, focus mostly on cardio but don’t completely disregard weights. You could do cardio 3 times a week and strength 2 times a week, or you could do a workout that includes both even if focusing mostly on cardio and only doing 1-2 exercises related to strength. If you want to tone or build muscle focus on strength. You can do 3 strength focused workouts a week and cardio focused 2 times a week. Always use cardio as a warm up so you don’t injure yourself when working strength. If you want to workout more than 5 times a week make sure to give yourself at least one rest day a week where you either don’t work out at all or only do a calm workout. Expert: Kunal Jhaveri, a strength & conditioning coach and trainer for 9 years, with a Degree in Kinesiology/ Exercise Science. CEO and owner of Bear Grips. During quarantine, we have more free time than we know what to do with. A lot of people have filled this time with exercise. That may sound like a great idea, but it can also lead to you getting obsessed with exercise and working out two, three, or even four times a day. You can end up overworking your body, getting injured, and even damaging your overall health, especially your mental health. Exercise can be good for both mind and body, but too much of anything can lead to serious problems. You can increase your anxiety if you don’t work out as much as you usually do, and your body won’t get any rest that gives it time to recover. If you do difficult workouts, it can even lead to serious injuries and exhaustion, causing you to pass out due to lack of energy to continue working out. Your body won’t be able to keep up with so much exercise, especially if you’re not used to it and not eating according to the amount of exercise you are doing. The best way to avoid exercise addiction during quarantine while still working out and keeping yourself busy is to make a schedule. In this schedule you can fit in work or study, a few creative activities (like reading or learning to do origami), and a workout that is similar to what you’re used to. Always leave one day to rest a week minimum so your body can recover. As you get better and stronger you can increase the difficulty of the workout, while always keeping it to one workout a day for six days maximum. Remember that it’s important to exercise your mind as well, so you can always do a puzzle or play sudoku as a creative activity to keep yourself entertained while also looking out for your mental health. And remember to do your best to prevent injuries by wearing the proper exercise gear. Personal trainer: Kunal Jhaveri, a strength & conditioning coach and trainer for 9 years, with a Degree in Kinesiology/ Exercise Science. CEO and owner of Bear Grips. Benefits The benefits of daily push ups include building up your upper body strength and defining more your muscles, especially your chest. It can also help you build up resistance in your shoulders, which helps towards other exercises you might want to achieve. It’s important to remember that push ups have many variations and they all work different muscles, although they all focus on your upper body. Risks Every exercise has risks, and although for push ups injuries aren’t as common, it doesn’t mean you can’t get injured doing push ups. Doing daily push ups can cause wrist pain, lower back pain and elbow pain. You can injure your elbows and wrists if you don’t do the push up correctly, and although this might sound impossible, remember that the different variations of push ups also include different levels of difficulty. This is where the risk of injuries becomes greater, when you are doing push up variations with a high level of difficulty. The best way to minimize the risks is to learn to do push ups correctly (this includes all the variations you want to try). And although doing daily push ups does have its benefits, if you want to improve your overall health, it is better to do varied exercises in your workouts, and not just push ups! If you are working out in a gym remember to be safe. One way to make sure you are covered and protected is to wear products that will help you stay safe, such as Bear Grips Shield Gloves, which are full finger workout gloves, so you no longer expose your hands to touching any surfaces. The touchscreen tips let you play your music and touch cardio screens. And don’t forget to wear a flexible breathable workout mask! Fitness expert: Kunal Jhaveri, a strength & conditioning coach and trainer for 9 years, with a Degree in Kinesiology/ Exercise Science. CEO and owner of Bear Grips 1. It can improve your metabolism. Although cold showers alone cannot help improve your metabolism, however, with a change in a healthier overall life, it can certainly have benefits. Humans are born with what is called “brown fat”, which is actually healthy to have. With healthy levels of “brown fat” you can improve your “white fat” which is usually what causes health conditions such as heart diseases. Brown fat is activated with cold water. 2. It can improve circulation. Athletes have been taking cold showers for years to help with injuries and faster healing. (To prevent injuries from happening frequently, remember to protect yourself with products such as Bear Grips products when working out!)The reason this works is because water that is at a temperature colder than our natural body temperature forces the body to work a bit harder to maintain its temperature. This causes the body to speed up the fresh and warm oxygenated blood. When taken regularly, this helps improve circulation. 3. It makes you more alert during the day. Before heading to work or school, taking a cold shower can help you completely wake up and stay alert for the day ahead. A cold shower helps increase your heart rate, your blood pressure and your respiratory rate, which helps bring your body and mind to a state of alertness.
