Also known as Mat Fraser, he is a professional CrossFit athlete who, previous to winning in 2016, had already placed second in the 2014 and 2015 CrossFit Games. From 2014 to the first year he won the CrossFit Games, he placed first in regionals, seventh in the open in 2014 and 2016, and first in the open in 2015. He placed first on all three phases in 2017 and 2018. He then proceeded to win the next two consecutive years, 2017 and 2018. This made it three years in a row that he has won the CrossFit Games.
Before becoming a CrossFit Athlete, he was an Olympic weightlifter that was injured in 2009. He does not have a fixed workout program. Due to the unpredictability of the CrossFit Games, he tries to prepare for everything. Before 2015, he did not have a strict diet either and would eat anything he desired. When he placed second in 2015 he decided to take a more serious approach with his diet.
